Wing Haven has been a part of Charlotte since it was opened in 1927 by Elizabeth and Edwin Clarkson. The gardens and bird sanctuary is enclosed on three acres in a lovely residential neighborhood.
The formal garden areas are designed so that visitors can walk along the paths and enjoy the lovely vistas, as well as many lovely trees, flowers and shrubs. Beyond the formal gardens are wooded areas filled with ferns and wild flowers.
Throughout the gardens, emphasis is on plantings for bird attraction - providing cover, nesting sites and food to local visiting birds. Visitors can tour the gardens. Guided tours are available for groups. Special programs are available throughout the year for children as well. The Haven also hosts lectures on horticulture as well as wildlife.
Visitors to Wing Haven will also enjoy the tour of the Clarkson home where Mr. and Mrs. Clarkson resided until 1988. Don't miss out on the gift shop where visitors can purchase special plants and wildlife gifts.
